Detailed Itinerary
Your Jetara Representative will welcome you at Bandaranaike International Airport and transfer you to Kandy, the cultural capital of Sri Lanka, is about 3 hours from Colombo. En-route, you may visit Kadugannawa – a beautiful viewpoint offering resplendent views of the surrounding hills. Arrive in Kandy, check in at the hotel and spend the evening at leisure either take a stroll around Kandy Lake or visit the local marketplace. Kandy, an ancient city steeped with history & culture, perpetuated even in its modern-day architecture with busy streets lined with shops & restaurants. Overnight at Kandy.
After breakfast, start your day with one of the most sacred sites in Sri Lanka: the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, known as Sri Dalada Maligawa. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and claimed to house a relic of Buddha’s tooth. As such, it is a major pilgrimage site. Several beautifully carved shrines are housed within the temple complex, which you will have an opportunity to see and understand the cultural significance of. Afternoon Kandy city tour: Proceed to the Kandy View Point and enjoy the panoramic view of the city. Take a walk in the busy Kandy Market, which is filled with local handicrafts. Later in the evening, enjoy a colorful cultural show, displaying traditional Sri Lankan music and dance. Overnight stay in Kandy.
Following this, after breakfast, depart Kandy and head for Dambulla, some 2 ½ hours away. The town is famous for its Cave Temples of Dambulla -alternately called the Golden Temple of Dambulla. Arrive and proceed on a tour to the cave temples with their mural paintings and over 150 statues of Buddha that make it one of the most important Buddhists sites in Sri Lanka. These caves date back to the 1st century BC and stand atop a hill, affording great views of the surrounding countryside. After the visit to the temple, check into your hotel and take the rest of the evening at leisure. Overnight in Dambulla.
Begin your day with an excursion to the famous Sigiriya Rock Fortress, about 30 minutes from Dambulla. Sometimes referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” Sigiriya is an ancient rock fortress and palace. It stands at a height of 200 meters. To get to the top, there are stone steps and walkways leading up, but the sensational views at the top and the well-preserved frescoes and mirror wall will make it all worth it. Take in the ancient city of Sigiriya before embarking on a more internationally cultured traditional village tour, where you will have ample opportunity to experience rural Sri Lankan life. Enjoy a bullock cart ride, proceed for the visits at local farms, and enjoy a typical Sri Lankan lunch. Later, return back to your hotel in Dambulla for a relaxed evening. Overnight stay in Dambulla.
After having breakfast, depart from Dambulla and proceed towards Peradeniya; this drive will take around 2.5 hours through scenic landscapes. After arrival, visit one of the biggest and most beautiful botanical gardens in Sri Lanka: Peradeniya Botanical Gardens. The gardens are spread over 147 acres with over 4,000 species of plants that include orchids, medicinal plants, and towering palm trees. Take your time for a leisurely stroll along the gardens and enjoy the beautiful greenery and serene surroundings. PM at leisure: You could go around the Royal Palace Park or just walk around the small town of Peradeniya. You would return to Peradeniya for your overnight stay.
After breakfast, transfer to Kandy and spend the day at leisure. You will be taken to some of your favorite places in the city, or on an excursion to Ramboda Falls, which is a beautiful waterfall situated about a little away from Kandy. Do some shopping at Kandy City Center for local handicrafts, gems, and souvenirs. You can also spend an afternoon leisurely at your hotel amidst the greenery of Kandy hills all around you. Stay overnight in Kandy.
Enjoy your last morning in Kandy at breakfast. Depending on the time of your flight you will be transferred to Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo, some 3 hours away, for your departure.
