Family Fun Sri Lanka
(6 Days / 5 Nights)
Detailed Itinerary
Upon your arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport, you will be met and assisted by a Jetara representative who will transfer you to Pinnawala, which is approximately 2.5 hours away from Colombo. It houses the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage; a place that looks after orphaned and injured elephants. After checking into your hotel, head to the orphanage for this unforgettable experience that allows your family to get up close and personal with the elephants. Watching afternoon feeding of the elephants and taking them to their daily bath in the nearby river will make your kids love the baby elephants and even feed them. Take an afternoon walk and retire for leisure. Overnight in Pinnawala.
Today’s morning, after a hearty breakfast, leave for Kandy, about an hour-and-a-half drive away. On arrival, your family will visit the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, where they take an interesting, educational walk through the extensive gardens with unusual plants, colorful flowers, and high palm trees. The children will be enthralled by viewing the monkeys and just observing the growth of the bamboo trees, while you will spend your time enjoying the surroundings. Later in the day, check into your hotel and then enjoy a leisurely lunch. In the afternoon, take a visit to one of Sri Lanka’s most venerated Buddhist sites, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic-Sri Dalada Maligawa. The children will find the beautiful architecture and learning about the importance of the temple quite fascinating. Free time in the evening to visit the markets in Kandy or just to unwind around Kandy Lake. Overnight in Kandy.
After breakfast, head toward Nuwara Eliya in style, nick-named “Little England,” owing to its appeal of a bygone era with a cool climate. The drive through misty mountains with lush tea plantations will be quite fascinating for the family. Arrive and check-in at the hotel. You will be served delicious lunch. PM: Tea Factory Visit: This should be an educative and, simultaneously, an interactive tour since everyone would be taken through how Sri Lanka does its famous Ceylon tea. Later, proceed to Gregory Lake; take a boat ride or simply stroll around the lake. The kids could even enjoy a pony ride or take a paddleboat. Overnight in Nuwara Eliya.
Early breakfast and choice between Horton Plains National Park or Hakgala Botanical Gardens to visit. For the outdoorsy family, Horton Plains offers an easy, family-friendly hike through beautiful scenery and to World’s End, a wonderful viewpoint that will take your breath away. Alternatively, families with younger children might want to visit the Hakgala Botanical Gardens for its peaceful surroundings of exotics plants and flowers, even boasting a small children’s play area. Return to Nuwara Eliya after this morning’s excursion for some afternoon free time to explore the town or to relax at your hotel. Overnight in Nuwara Eliya.
After breakfast, transfer to Bentota, which is a scenic 4.5-hour drive and would take you from the hills down onto the southern coast of Sri Lanka. Arrive in Bentota and check into your beach front hotel. In the afternoon, relaxation at the beach. Essentially, Bentota is a quiet beach with calm, family-friendly waters where kids can splash in shallow water, building their sandcastles. For those who want a bit of adventure, this is the place where water sports can be enjoyed together as a family, such as banana boat rides, jet skiing, or even windsurfing. In the evening, enjoy dinner with beautiful sunset views at the beachfront. Overnight stay in Bentota.
In the morning after breakfast, visit the nearby turtle hatchery and learn how your family can contribute towards conservation efforts concerning sea turtles. In this hatchery, you will be allowed to see tiny babies of turtles and especially have an educational and heart-touching time releasing the baby turtles into the ocean with the kids. Free time is available at the beach after the visit until checkout and return to Colombo. According to your flight timings, you will be transferred to Bandaranaike International Airport for your departure.
